ROLLING MEADOWS, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say one person has died following a three-alarm fire at an apartment building in a northwest suburb of Chicago.

More than 20 fire departments responded to blaze Wednesday night at a three-story complex in Rolling Meadows. Firefighters reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the building when they arrived on the scene.

Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote says one person jumped from a balcony on the top floor and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The victim’s name hasn’t been released.

Officials say the building wasn’t equipped with a sprinkler system.

No other injuries were reported.
