ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina State University trustees have been told some employees haven’t been turning in the paperwork required for the school to keep it accreditation.

The school has been on probation since the summer of 2014 because of financial problems, and in June, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools voted to keep the university on probation instead of removing the accreditation entirety, which likely would have forced South Carolina’s only public historically black college to close.

Trustees met Thursday and were told the university submitted a first draft of a required report to the accreditation board without some supporting documents requested by Rita Teal, the leader of the school’s accreditation committee, according to a report in The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg (http://bit.ly/1HMM4gC).

“Your accreditation of this university is hanging in the balance,” trustee Doris Helms said. “There is no more important thing than getting those documents in and anybody who does not do so shouldn’t be in the position that he or she is in.”

The school’s academic department turned in none of the needed paperwork, trustees were told.

Interim President Franklin Evans needs to handle the problem with the deadline for another report looming in January, Board of Trustees Chairman Charlie Way said.

“If Dr. Teal needs something by Dec. 1 and the faculty doesn’t give it to her, then we expect you to handle it,” Way said. “If you give a directive to your faculty and it’s not carried through, then this board expects you to handle it.”

Trustees were told Thursday the school’s financial situation is improving.

Donations are double what they were last year at this time and the institution is maintaining a balanced budget, Evans said.
