ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz wants to suspend the program that gives work visas to highly skilled immigrants.

That’s one piece of an immigration plan the Texas senator released Friday. It would also dramatically increase deportations, add hundreds of miles to the wall on the border with Mexico and crack down on children of immigrants in the country illegally.

The tea party favorite is courting the GOP’s more conservative wing. It’s a play for the same voters now backing businessman Donald Trump and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.

Cruz is also taking shots at Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, Republicans who support a pathway to citizenship for immigrants in the country illegally. He says such immigrants are stealing jobs from U.S. citizens.

Cruz also wants to end so-called “birthright citizenship.”
