MIDLAND PARK, N.J. (AP) - Authorities have released a 911 call made by a friend of a woman who was fatally stabbed in the driveway of her New Jersey home last month.

Suzanne Bardzell was talking with her friend over the phone moments before her Oct. 22 death, The Record (https://bit.ly/1WwfP17) reported Wednesday.

The friend, of Shelter Island, New York, told police she heard the 48-year-old Bardzell scream “Oh my God, no!” as a man was talking in the background. The newspaper didn’t name the friend.

“I’m like, ‘Oh my God, Suzanne, what’s the matter?’ And I did hear some guy in the background,” the friend said, adding that she heard the man say: “I’m sorry to have to do this to you” or “I’m sorry that I’m doing this to you.”

The friend told police Bardzell had a rocky three-year relationship with fired New York City police Officer Arthur Lomando, of Centereach, New York. Lomando, 44, has been charged with murder in Bardzell’s death. He is accused of smashing out a window of Bardzell’s sport utility vehicle and killing her with a machete-like knife.

The special education teacher with two teenage sons died at the scene.

Lomando later threw himself in front of a subway train in Manhattan and was hospitalized. Doctors amputated his feet.

Earlier last month, Lomando was charged with burglary and making terroristic threats stemming from an Oct. 5 incident at Bardzell’s home, as well as contempt and harassment after allegedly contacting a friend of Bardzell on Oct. 9.

Before her death, Bardzell obtained a restraining order against Lomando, who had been fired from the New York City police force in 2004 following misconduct accusations involving vacation and overtime.

Another friend of Bardzell said Bardzell feared for her life, even saying many times in the days leading up to the attack that she thought Lomando was going to kill her.
