SAN DIEGO (AP) - China’s Peace Ark is in San Diego, where the hospital ship will offer its first public tours on the U.S. mainland.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1SnSlp2 ) that the ship arrived Tuesday for a five-day visit with U.S. Navy and Veteran Affairs officials. Navy officials say the Chinese ship will open to the public Thursday afternoon.

The Peace Ark was commissioned in 2008 and is operated by China’s People’s Liberation Army. The ship has operating theaters and hundreds of hospital beds, like the U.S. Navy’s San Diego-based Mercy and Virginia-based Comfort.

On the Peace Ark, however, doctors practice both Western medicine and traditional Chinese techniques.

Tours were offered when the Peace Ark visited Hawaii in 2014, but access was somewhat limited.

Peace Ark personnel are scheduled to visit medical sights in the San Diego area, including the Mercy.
