YONKERS, N.Y. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say in a lawsuit that a Yonkers construction company cheated the government out of funds while leading an overhaul of Interstate 287.

The Journal News reports (https://lohud.us/1RuFMrg ) the lawsuit was filed Tuesday against Yonkers Contracting Inc.

It’s accused of falsely claiming it had subcontracted millions of dollars worth of steel purchases to Global Marine Supply Co. in order to fulfill a regulation for the project. The lawsuit says Global Marine played no commercially useful function on the Cross-Westchester Expressway project.

Instead, prosecutors say the company had already negotiated a deal with a third party to supply steel for the project.

Yonkers Contracting didn’t return calls for comment.
