NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A New Orleans grocery store has been ordered to pay $403,000 in overtime back wages to employees.

The U.S. Department of Labor says the ruling went against the owners of the Ideal Discount Market, a grocery store specializing in Hispanic foods. Officials said the ruling was handed down Tuesday by the federal court in New Orleans.

The Labor Department alleged the Ideal Discount Market failed to pay overtime as required by the Fair Labor Standards Act to 56 workers, including cooks, butchers, cashiers and stockers.

The Labor Department also accused the grocery store of failing to keep accurate records of employees’ hours and pay. It said some employees worked entirely “off the books.”
