SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Syracuse police say rubbernecking may have caused three crashes on one side of Interstate 690 while officers were at the scene of a collision on the other side.

Two cars going eastbound rear-ended one another around 6 p.m. Wednesday as one of the vehicles attempted to merge into another lane. Police say three cars then crashed in the westbound lanes.

Several people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The highway was closed for more than 90 minutes while the damaged vehicles were towed and debris was removed.

Police say traffic that slowed and stopped so motorists could look at the eastbound crash possibly caused the multiple accidents.
