HOUSTON (AP) - A Houston police officer has shot and killed a driver who pulled a pistol during a traffic stop.

Police say two officers tried to stop the man for traffic violations early Wednesday. The pickup truck, with a woman passenger, eventually stopped.

A police statement says one officer was on the driver’s side as the suspect refused to roll down his window. The second officer was on the passenger’s side and saw, through the open window, the driver reach into his pocket.

The second officer ordered the driver to show his hands. Police say the driver refused and pulled a gun. The second officer shot the suspect. The wounded man drove off but hit a tree.

The suspect died at the scene. His name wasn’t immediately released.

The passenger was detained.
