YORK, Pa. (AP) - A man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting deaths of two men in what authorities called a drug deal gone bad two years ago.

Jurors in York County on Friday convicted 23-year-old Dejerek Smallwood of York in the November 2013 slayings of 23-year-old Braydon Aldinger and 26-year-old Derek Ferree.

Prosecutors alleged that the drug deal degenerated into a fight during which 23-year-old Laquan Pierrelouis shot the victims. He is awaiting trial.

Defense attorneys argued that the other men attacked Smallwood and he fired in self-defense.

The York Dispatch reports that Smallwood was visibly upset by the verdict, putting his head down briefly after it was announced.

He reached a manslaughter plea deal earlier this year but later withdrew, believing he could convince a jury of his innocence.
