GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina’s fourth state veterans’ cemetery should be the site of military burials by early next year.

Gov. Pat McCrory attended and spoke Monday at the dedication of the Eastern Carolina State Veterans Cemetery outside of Goldsboro. McCrory’s office says the dedication was performed in honor of a Fort Bragg-based soldier - Master Sgt. Joshua Wheeler - who was killed last month in Iraq during a raid to free hostages.

Local media outlets say the cemetery was built with the help of a federal grant of more than $5 million. It could ultimately accommodate about 11,000 graves. Burial plots are provided free for eligible veterans and their spouses.

Other state veterans’ cemeteries are in Spring Lake, Black Mountain and Jacksonville.
