ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a former deputy shot and wounded an armed bank robber in northeast Florida.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office reports that the former Jacksonville deputy was waiting in the drive-thru line at the Compass Bank branch in Julington Creek just before noon Monday when he saw 25-year-old David Duong flee out a side door. Local media reports that the former deputy followed Duong in his vehicle and eventually confronted the man.

Authorities say a struggle ensued, and Duong attempted to pull a gun from his waistband. The former deputy then pulled his own gun and shot Duong in the face. Officials say Duong ran away and was eventually stopped by a St. Johns County deputy. Detectives say they recovered a large amount of cash, a gun and a note demanding money.

Duong was airlifted to a Jacksonville hospital with life-threatening injuries.
