STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A man convicted of murder in the shooting death of an eastern Pennsylvania man almost five decades ago has been sentenced to life in prison with no parole.

Sixty-eight-year-old Richard Keiper, of Boyd, Texas, was sentenced Thursday for the October 1968 death of 40-year-old Alfred Barnes, of Bethlehem. A jury convicted Keiper of first-degree murder in July.

Barnes was an assistant to the vice president at Bethlehem Steel. Hunters found his bullet-riddled body in a field near Effort. His car was later recovered in Warren County, New Jersey.

Prosecutors said Keiper was arrested in September 2013 after confessing to his involvement in Barnes’ death.

Defense attorneys argued that Keiper acted in self-defense. Prosecutors said ballistic and other evidence contradicted those claims.
