DETROIT (AP) - A former Detroit police officer is on probation until next June for his role in a confrontation with three men over the theft of a cellphone belonging to the daughter of a St. Clair Shores police sergeant.

The Wayne County prosecutor’s office says David Pomeroy was sentenced Thursday for failing to uphold or enforce the law, a misdemeanor.

Authorities have said Michael Notoriano’s teenage daughter was robbed two years ago in Detroit after being thrown to the ground. Prosecutors said Notoriano and Pomeroy, then a Detroit police sergeant, traced the phone and confronted the men about the theft.

A jury failed to reach a verdict in Notoriano’s robbery trial in February and a mistrial was declared. Another jury trial is scheduled to start in January.
