NEW YORK (AP) - Ridership is up on the Staten Island Ferry following a recent expansion of service.

The increase was reported in the Mayor’s Management Report for fiscal year 2015.

The Staten Island Advance (http://bit.ly/1F6cLRq ) reports that ridership rose four percent over the previous year, to 21.9 million from 21 million.

The city didn’t directly link the increase in ridership to the expansion. But the growth came after the Department of Transportation added more overnight and weekend trips.

A DOT spokeswoman says several factors contribute to an increase in ridership, including tourism and holiday travel.

Another 26 round trips are expected to be added this fall.
