PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island nonprofit organization has been awarded a $250,000 grant to help immigrants prepare for U.S. citizenship.

Progreso Latino, based in Central Falls, is one of 40 organizations nationwide to receive the competitive grant from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services this year.

The social services organization will use the funds to expand the range of citizenship preparation services available to lawful, permanent residents who are preparing for U.S. citizenship. Progreso Latino is federally accredited to provide immigration assistance.

Rhode Island Sen. Jack Reed, who helped secure the funding, says the grant will help integrate new citizens into the community and the country.

A Reed spokesman says the Democratic senator has worked with Progreso Latino on a range of issues and is a strong supporter of the organization’s work.
