BALDWIN, Mich. (AP) - The Land Conservancy of West Michigan has launched a 3-year, $1.5 million campaign to protect land along the Pere Marquette River.

The conservancy says the Pere Marquette River’s watershed includes a patchwork of protected private and public properties with large stretches of unprotected land. The river starts in Lake County near Baldwin and runs to Pere Marquette Lake at Ludington, where waters flow into Lake Michigan.

The conservancy says uncontrolled development along the river could threaten the health of the river and area wildlife. Those involved are working with people along the river to create conservation agreements as well as to complete land acquisitions.
