BRUSSELS (AP) - Belgium has hired former Everton manager Roberto Martinez as the new coach of the national team.

Belgium made the announcement via its Twitter feed, saying “(hashtag)welcomeRoberto.” Pierre Cornez, a spokesman for the Belgian FA, confirmed the appointment of Martinez via text message on Wednesday.

Martinez will be officially presented at a news conference on Thursday afternoon as the replacement for Marc Wilmots, who was fired after the European Championship. Belgium was beaten 3-1 by Wales in the Euro 2016 quarterfinals.

The 43-year-old Martinez was fired by Everton in May after nearly three years in charge. He previously managed Swansea and Wigan, which he guided to the FA Cup title in 2013.

He has a reputation for open, attacking football.
