SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - A 21-year-old California man has been sentenced to prison for hacking into social media accounts of young women and extorting them.

The Sacramento Bee reports (http://bit.ly/2aSj8PN ) that prosecutors said former American River College student Christian Hirtzel gained access to compromising photos of young women and threatened to share them if the women didn’t pose for more graphic photos and videos.

Some targets were young women he dated. Others he barely knew.

Hirtzel was arrested in January after a yearlong investigation by community college police and Sacramento County detectives.

He pleaded no contest in June to extortion, possession of child pornography and related charges and was sentenced Tuesday to nearly five years in state prison.

He must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
