HOBBS, N.M. (AP) - Authorities in the southeastern New Mexico city of Hobbs say a house exploded, injuring a man sleeping inside.

City spokeswoman Meghan Mooney says the cause of the Tuesday night explosion is under investigation.

She says the man sleeping in the home was woken by the explosion and extracted himself from the wreckage.

Mooney says the man was taken to a hospital for evaluation of what she called “potentially serious injuries.”

The spokeswoman says gas and electricity service to the block was temporarily shut down until the investigation is complete.

A photo distributed by Mooney shows a pickup truck parked next to wreckage of the nearly flattened house, with debris strewn on the street in front.
