CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - Authorities say a 9-month-old girl has died after being found unresponsive in a bathtub over the weekend after the person bathing her stepped away.

Corpus Christi police Senior Officer Travis Pace tells the Corpus Christi Caller-Times (http://bit.ly/2aER6Tc ) officers were called to the home Saturday night by a man who was bathing his girlfriend’s two children. When the man stepped away to grab the children’s clothes, the girl became submerged underwater.

Pace said the man performed CPR until medics arrived and took her to a hospital. The Nueces County Medical Examiner’s Office said the baby, Raylynn Hernandez, died Tuesday.

Pace says the incident appears to be an accident, but police are investigating. Child Protective Services is also investigating.

Chief Forensic Investigator Hugo Stimmler says the official cause of death is pending.
