ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s attorney general says six companies touting ineffective insect repellents as protectors against the Zika virus have taken down misleading online ads.

They include the Wildheart Outdoors Natural Mosquito Repellent Bracelet, MosQUITo Repellent Bracelet Wristband Band, Kenza High Quality Zika Mosquito Repellent Smiley Patch and Mobile Pro Gear ZIKA Shield Mosquito Repellent Bands. Also, STAR Ultrasonic Pest Repeller and iGear iGuard 2.0 Ultrasonic Insect Pest Repellent.

Sellers of the Neor Mosquito Repellent Bracelet, based in the Czech Republic, also received a letter.

Schneiderman threatened to sue if the ads weren’t pulled.

The tropical mosquito that carries Zika is not found in New York. More than 500 people are infected here, all apparently related to travel to affected areas. Some cases were sexually transmitted.

Certain other insect repellants work.
