SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - South Bend police are offering the police department as a safe meeting place in hopes of preventing robberies during Internet purchases.

The move comes after at least three different people were robbed at gunpoint during June 2013 when they went to a meeting place in a South Bend neighborhood. The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/2b5gUZp ) the police department will be available as a round-the-clock neutral site for buyers and sellers to finalize purchases that were set up online.

Police say buyers and sellers can use the police station parking lot or lobby, which are both monitored by surveillance cameras. The department is available for any private sale or exchange, including those not set up online.

The LaPorte County sheriff’s department also offers a similar service.
