NEW YORK (AP) - Authorities say a top New York City street gang leader and 39 others have been charged in connection with dozens of crimes including stabbings and shootings.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark says Thursday a leader of one of the largest Bloods sets on the East Coast, the Blood Hound Brims, is among the arrested.

She says the gangster gave orders from his Rikers Island jail cell.

Clark says other defendants include a 13-year-old boy who was made to sell drugs and run guns for older gang members.

Authorities say the Nine-Four crew is responsible for 40 violent acts since 2012, including four murders.

They say the gang members turned the Bronx’s Fordham neighborhood into a warzone.

Prosecutors say the gang members acknowledged each other by calling out “Whoopty.”
