GRETNA, La. (AP) - A divided Jefferson Parish School Board has voted to put a campus in Waggaman that has been vacant since 2012 up for sale.

Board members backing the decision said upkeep has become too expensive to justify holding onto the former Norbert Rillieux Elementary School.

The New Orleans Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/2aXJzlN) Cedric Floyd, the most vocal opponent of a sale, said the board should keep the building in case the district eventually needs to accommodate a growing student population, but he was overruled by a vote of 6-3 Wednesday.

Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni told the board he has spoken with one group interested in buying the land to build a church.
