BELFAST, Maine (AP) - A Maine teenager has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of 49-year-old Steven Hodgdon of Troy in their home in March 2015.

The teen entered the plea Friday under an agreement in which prosecutors dropped a murder charge.

A judge imposed a suspended sentenced for manslaughter and ordered him to serve four years of probation after he completes a sentence imposed in juvenile court. The maximum sentence in juvenile proceedings in Maine is incarceration until age 21.

The investigation began after Hodgdon was found unresponsive in his home March 8. The state medical examiner’s office says he died from a stab wound to the chest.

Defense lawyer John Martin said the stabbing was a case of self defense.
