SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - An avalanche warning has been issued for northern Utah and hundreds of homes lost electricity as brisk winds whipped through northern Utah ahead of a storm expected to bring snow Friday.

The National Weather Service reported winds overnight of nearly 50 mph in many areas in the Salt Lake City area. Meteorologist Monica Traphagan said gusts of 30-40 mph will continue until a storm hits later Friday. It is expected to bring rain that will turn into small amounts of snow.

Rocky Mountain Power spokesperson Margaret Oler says winds caused several electrical pole fires that led to power outages The largest outage was in Tooele, where nearly 2,700 customers were without power for several hours overnight.

The avalanche warning is in effect through Saturday morning in northern and central Utah mountains.
