PHOENIX (AP) - A House panel has passed a measure that would limit the authority of The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission.

Rep. Warren Petersen of Gilbert sponsored a bill that would remove an exemption that limits the commission’s oversight from elected officials.

Petersen said he wants to ensure that the commission’s rulemaking process receives due process.

Executive director of the commission Tom Collins said there is already oversight including a 60-day posting period that allows public scrutiny before rules are changed.

Petersen revised the bill from an earlier version that would have limited the commission’s ability to lobby the Legislature.

The House Committee on Government and Higher Education passed House Concurrent Resolution 2035 on a 5-3 vote Thursday.

The decision to enforce the measure would be left to voters.
