ELIZABETH, N.J. (AP) - A Union County jury has convicted a man of attempted murder for stabbing two women who said he told them he was looking for “the portal to hell” in their backyard.

Morgan Mesz faces up to 20 years in prison on each of two attempted murder counts. He also was convicted of aggravated assault and weapons charges.

The women said they encountered Mesz in their backyard shed in Union Township on Jan. 7, 2011.

He attacked them with a hatchet and knife before he was subdued by a neighbor who heard the commotion.

The women suffered critical wounds but survived. They and the neighbor testified at Mesz’s trial.

His sentencing is scheduled for April 15.
