RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Wintry precipitation and dangerously cold temperatures are expected in parts of North Carolina heading into the weekend, and forecasters at the National Weather Service say a more substantial storm may reach the state next week.

Forecasters on Thursday said there will be a period of light snow or wintry mix likely on Friday, mainly near and east of U.S. 1. A light accumulation of snow and sleet appears likely, especially from Raleigh north and east with greater amounts in the Tarboro and Roanoke Rapids areas. More of a wintry mix is expected in Goldsboro and Fayetteville.

While light snow is expected for the mountains, little accumulation is expected for the Triad.

The weather service is also calling for dangerously cold temperatures across the state throughout the weekend.
