SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Police are investigating the death of a 56-year-old man who was struck by a motorist while crossing a street in Syracuse.

Police say Sylvester Gardner of Syracuse was hit by a car Wednesday evening as he crossed a busy boulevard on the eastern side of the city.

Arriving officers found Gardner unconscious with severe injuries. He was rushed to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, 72-year-old Leroy Johnson of Syracuse, was not harmed and refused medical treatment at the scene on Erie Boulevard.

Police said Thursday the investigation is continuing.
