LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) - The funeral for a South Carolina man who collapsed and died during a family outing to the Super Bowl will be held Saturday in Lancaster, his widow said.

Daffney Rucker said the service for her husband, William Rucker, 44, is scheduled for noon at a middle school named for his grandfather.

“It is so painful,” Daffney Rucker said. “I think I’m still in a daze.”

William Rucker and members of his family were attending a party at Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco last Sunday when Keyshawn Johnson, who played for the Carolina Panthers, handed his 9-year-old son, Aaron, a football. Moments later and just hours before the Super Bowl began, Rucker collapsed and died. The story was initially reported by WBTV in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The cause of death was still unknown, and his wife said he had no previous health issues.

Daffney Rucker said her husband, who ran a bail bonding service in Lancaster, was a Panthers fan and was overjoyed about being around the Super Bowl festivities. She said he always wanted his son to get a football and was excited when he got one.

“He always wanted to make my son happy,” Daffney Rucker said Thursday, adding that Johnson has contacted her since her husband’s death. “Their relationship was wonderful.”
