SKOWHEGAN, Maine (AP) - A judge has imposed a 45-year prison sentence on a Maine man convicted in the pipe-beating death of another man in 2013.

Jason Cote of Palmyra contended that he killed in self-defense, but prosecutors say he delivered the fatal blow while the victim was defenseless on the floor.

Superior Court Justice Andrew Horton described the crime Friday as a “brutal, savage killing.”

Cote was convicted in December of murder in the death of Ricky Cole.

Police said the killing was drug related.

Cole’s body was found in his blood-spattered mobile home July 18, 2013. DNA samples taken from Cote’s clothing the day after the killing matched the DNA from Cole’s blood.
