SEASIDE, Ore. (AP) - People gathered with flags and flowers on Friday to remember an officer slain while on duty last week in Seaside, Oregon.

The memorial service was held in Seaside for 39-year-old police Sgt. Jason Goodding, who joined the resort town’s police department in 2003.

“This profession is a brotherhood and a family, and we want to give him and the community the best send-off we possibly can,” Benton County Sheriff’s Office Detective Sgt. David Peterson said.

At the service, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown presented Goodding’s wife, Amy, with the state’s Medal of Ultimate Sacrifice, awarded to Goodding posthumously.

The medal may be awarded to families of law enforcement officers who died while performing their duties or were killed because of their employment as law enforcement officers, according to state law.

Goodding was shot to death as he was serving a felony arrest warrant on the night of Feb. 5. The 55-year-old suspect, who was shot by another officer, also died.

When the man, identified as Phillip Ferry of Seaside, wouldn’t show his hands, the other officer used a Taser on him, Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis said. While the Taser seemed to incapacitate Ferry, “it didn’t do much more,” he said.

The suspect went down on the ground. When Goodding tried to subdue him, Ferry pulled out gun and fired one shot. The other officer returned fire, shooting the suspect, who later died at a local hospital. The second officer was not hurt.

Marquis said it appears that the fatal shooting of Ferry is justified.

Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin said Goodding was familiar with Ferry, and that Ferry had “a vast record” and had been in-and-out of jail.

He described Goodding as an extraordinarily good police officer.

Goodding is survived by his wife and two young daughters. He graduated from Sherwood High School, and graduated from Portland State University. During his time with the department, he ran the drug team, worked as a detective sergeant and as a patrol sergeant.

Seaside is a town of about 6,500 people on the northern Oregon coast. It is about 80 miles west of Portland.
