FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) - A 35-year-old upstate New York man implicated in the drug overdose death of his girlfriend’s baby has pleaded guilty to reduced charges.

The Post-Star of Glens Falls reports (bit.ly/1QjLhqn) Joshua Bennett of Kingsbury pleaded guilty Tuesday in a Washington County court to criminally negligent homicide and drug possession. Second-degree murder and manslaughter charges will be dismissed.

Bennett was charged after 1-year-old Kayleigh Cassell died last year from what authorities said was complications from acute heroin and cocaine intoxication. He admitted having the drugs in the home where the child died last Feb. 22.

Jury selection in Bennett’s murder case was to begin on the one-year anniversary of the child’s death. He’s currently in prison for an earlier drug conviction.

Kayleigh’s 27-year-old mother, Rachel Ball, pleaded guilty in November to criminally negligent homicide.
