PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The leader of a theater group in Pierre says a proposed events center in the city should have space not only for concerts and sporting events but also for the arts.

Pierre has an opera house and a theater at the local high school, but Pierre Players President Rachel Hearn tells the Capital Journal (http://bit.ly/1Xv9TSK ) that more theater space is still needed in the city. She says the group hopes any new event center could have a small stage for productions.

Architects are designing a $14.5 million facility to replace the old downtown City Auditorium, which was closed in 2010 because of structural issues and later demolished. The Pierre City Commission also has hired a consulting firm to analyze how much it would cost to run a center.
