RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Racial slurs and threats of physical violence against some Petersburg City Council members and administration staff have caused the council to postpone its regularly scheduled meeting.

According to The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1ROs85f ), Petersburg City Attorney Brian Telfair said Wednesday that an email sent to the city Saturday used a racial slur to describe Petersburg residents.

Telfair says on Tuesday afternoon he then received a threat of physical harm to certain individual city officials and administration staff. Telfair didn’t disclose the nature of the threat nor to whom specifically it was directed.

Following Tuesday’s threat, Mayor W. Howard Myers decided to “adjourn” the scheduled meeting set for later that evening. Five of seven council members and about 50 residents still showed up, but the meeting wasn’t held.
