MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - Police in California have busted a cockfighting operation at a residence west of Modesto.

The Modesto Bee reports (http://bit.ly/1XdpnL7 ) that Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of dog fighting on Super Bowl Sunday. But Sgt. Anthony Bejaran says they discovered a rooster fighting operation in the backyard.

Deputies found about 50 dead roosters, 300 live ones, a fighting pen and metal fighting spurs.

Bejaran says several people at the residence ran off when deputies arrived. He says about 20 men were detained and deputies arrested the 37-year-old homeowner.

The homeowner is facing animal cruelty charges.

Animal control officers were called to take custody of the roosters.
