BALTIMORE (AP) - Workers are preparing to demolish much of the historic Mayfair Theatre in Baltimore.

The Baltimore Sun reports (http://bsun.md/29i0FuH ) that all of the 112-year-old structure will be razed except for the facade and about 35 feet of the front lobby.

Engineers have said the crumbling building is a threat to public safety.

Tania Baker, director of communication for Baltimore Housing, said demolition of the rear of the structure could start as early as next week.

Kimberly Clark, executive director of the Baltimore Development Corp., said she’s hopeful that a creative developer will be able to build there using the theater’s existing facade.

The building has been vacant for about three decades. Its roof collapsed in 1998 and it was damaged in a fire that occurred in an adjacent building in 2014.
