JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - Nearly two dozen new U.S. citizens have taken their oaths of allegiance at a ceremony staged at Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

Democratic U.S. Senator Cory Booker and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop were among the officials who spoke at Monday morning’s ceremony.

The 21 new citizens came from 17 countries: Bangladesh, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Guyana, India, Liberia, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Poland and Togo.

One of the newly naturalized citizens is now serving in the Navy.

Officials say the event was one of nearly 100 naturalization ceremonies that have been staged across the country since Thursday.
