SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont fire officials say five people were able to escape unharmed from a fire that destroyed a South Burlington home.

Authorities say homeowners Kevin and Nikki Sleeper awoke at about 3:40 a.m. Monday to the smell of smoke and the glow of flames outside their second-floor bedroom in South Burlington.

They were able to grab their 22-month-old daughter and alert two guests in the basement before fleeing out a first-floor side door.

State and South Burlington fire investigators say they suspect a recessed light over the front door may be the source of the fire.

Officials say the home and two cars in the garage are deemed a total loss. They estimate the blaze caused about $750,000 in damage.
