CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Officials have announced that the warden of the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington has retired.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/29iB3KL ) that Steve Hargett became warden of the Torrington facility in 2011 after holding the position at the Wyoming Honor Conservation Camp in Newcastle for three years. His retirement marks the end of a 40-year career in corrections.

During his time in Wyoming, which began in 2008, Hargett created a wellness program that earned a “Best Practices” award from the National Commission on Correctional Health Care.

The state Department of Corrections says Hargett is known for his “hands-on approach” and focus on keeping inmates and staff safe.

A retirement celebration was held for Hargett in May.

The department has not yet chosen a new warden for the Torrington prison.
