COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - A community group is working to have 1,000 solar panels installed on homes this year in a south-central Indiana city.

The Columbus Community Solar Initiative says it’s trying minimize the cost of the solar panels by coordinating residents, businesses and others who are interested in taking part. It is planning a June 8 public meeting about the project.

Group coordinator Michael Mullett tells The (Columbus) Republic (http://bit.ly/20RHwPU ) that with a discount of up to 20 percent from the installer and tax credits, a home system of about 20 solar panels could be less than $10,000.

Mullett says he has solar panels on his home and hopes more homeowners will do so to help increase use of renewable energy and help prevent climate change.
