BRANDON, Miss. (AP) - A pregnant Mississippi woman has won a court order giving her the right to keep her placenta.

The Clarion-Ledger reports (http://on.thec-l.com/27ZYfpv) Jordan Thiering (THEER’-ing) was granted the court order on May 17.

Thiering said she wants to have the placenta placed in capsules for her own consumption. It’s a practice said by some to have health benefits for the mother, although that has not been scientifically proven.

She said she contacted the hospital where she planned to give birth and was told she would need a court order because of Mississippi Department of Health policy.

MSDH spokeswoman Liz Sharlot says the agency isn’t a pivotal party in the lawsuit.

After turning to a Facebook group for moms, Thiering was contacted by an attorney who helped her obtain the court order.
