PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A $6 million relief package for in-state commercial truckers is part of a budget bill under consideration in Rhode Island.

The Providence Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1XLVaXe ) the bill would reduce the annual registration fees paid by commercial trucks weighing at least 10,000 pounds. It’s headed to the House for a vote Wednesday.

Democratic House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello says the lower registration fees would cost the state about $4.2 million. He says there’s also a $2 million “clean diesel” fund to help truckers replace emissions equipment and do regular maintenance on their engines.

Truckers have been upset with state leaders for moving forward with a plan to toll large commercial trucks to raise money for bridge repairs.

But Mattiello says he doesn’t want to connect the tolls with the relief package.
