BELLFLOWER, Calif. (AP) - A suspect has been arrested in the wounding of two Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies during a series of gunbattles.

Sheriff Jim McDonnell announced early Friday that the suspect was arrested after holding a hostage in a structure behind a home.

The sheriff says the two deputies are in critical but stable condition.

The Sheriff’s Department says the incident began Thursday night in Bellflower when deputies at a DUI checkpoint tried to conduct a vehicle stop.

A motorcycle deputy was following the vehicle when it stopped, the driver got out and fired. The deputy was hit but returned fire.

The motorist fled on foot and fired at other deputies, striking one. The motorist fired at a third group of deputies.

They returned fire but the driver got away.
