RODANTHE, N.C. (AP) - The state Department of Transportation is taking public comment on a planned new bridge on N.C. Highway 12 over Pamlico Sound.

The 2.4-mile-long bridge would extend from the southern end of the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge over the sound and into Rodanthe.

Officials say the design is preferred instead of a bridge along the existing route of N.C. 12 because it reduces impacts to the refuge, the ocean shoreline and to Rodanthe.

The DOT is taking comment through July 15 and is holding three public meetings on the Outer Banks later this month.

The meetings are set for June 20 in Ocracoke, June 21 in Rodanthe and June 22 in Manteo.
