PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - A million-dollar upgrade to Hyde Stadium in Pierre is over deadline, resulting in hefty penalties for the contractor.

Midwest Construction is subject to a $250-per-day penalty because it missed the May 15 completion deadline, the Capital Journal reported (http://bit.ly/24CwZZJ ).

“We’re really at the mercy of our suppliers,” company spokeswoman Glennis Zarecky said.

Ordered railing and fencing should arrive by early next week, she said. The city also is installing new grass, and the remodeling is expected to be done in a couple of weeks.

“We’re waiting to see if the grass takes to the soil,” American Legion Post 8 coach Brian White said. “Once everything is completed, we’ll let the people know so we can pack that stadium.”

The 81-year-old baseball stadium has about 1,500 seats. Nearly 600 are being added. The renovation project funded by both public and private money also includes picnic and plaza areas and seating for people with disabilities.

“In designing the stadium, we wanted to provide new ways to watch the game,” architect Brad Ciaverella said. “We want to build a park that people would enjoy going to.”
