BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) - A jury has determined that two Carbon County sheriff’s deputies were justified when they shot and killed a man who pointed a rifle at them.

The Billings Gazette reports (https://goo.gl/sGu8Wu ) jurors deliberated for about 15 minutes Thursday before returning the decision. The deputies shot John Charles “JC” Graham after Graham pointed a rifle at them in Joliet on March 7.

Among the witnesses at the coroner’s inquest were Gail Stradtman, Graham’s mother; and Katie Rushton, Graham’s girlfriend. They testified that Graham was experiencing serious mental health issues that night.

Stradtman said the deputies were not to blame.

Graham died from three gunshot wounds, and a toxicology screen found small amounts of alcohol and methamphetamine in his system. The screen also showed anti-seizure and anti-psychotic medications.
