PLACENTIA, Calif. (AP) - City officials now say the former finance services manager of Placentia allegedly embezzled nearly $5 million - about $600,000 more than first believed.

Michael Nguyen (Win) was arrested in April on a warrant charging him with multiple counts of misappropriating public funds.

The Orange County Register reported Wednesday (http://bit.ly/1RYfbkD) that the ongoing investigation uncovered additional missing funds. Authorities say so far they have seized about $2.7 million of the missing $5 million.

Prosecutors say Nguyen, who was hired in 2008, made wire transfers from city coffers to personal and other accounts.

It’s not immediately clear whether Nguyen has a lawyer. He’s due in court June 17.

If convicted, he could face up to 29 years in prison.

Councilman Scott Nelson says he is optimistic that the city will recover most of the missing funds.
